How Smart Locks Actually Work
Smart locks use electronic components to control your door’s locking mechanism. Depending on the type you buy, you may be able to unlock your door using a smartphone app, PIN code, fingerprint, key fob or Bluetooth.
Most are powered by batteries rather than your home’s mains electricity, to protect against lockouts if the power goes out. Some connect to your Wi-Fi, while others use Bluetooth or another wireless connection. The exact features vary, so it’s important to understand how a particular lock works before choosing one.
What Powers Smart Locks?
There’s no such thing as a universal smart lock. There are hundreds of different brands and types, and several different ways to power them too. There are 4 common power sources we come across:
Disposable alkaline batteries: The most popular option by far is disposable batteries, usually AA or AAA. They’re cheap, easy for anyone to replace, don’t need wiring into your door, and typically last between 6 to 12 months at a time.
Rechargeable lithium-ion battery packs: These are built-in or removable packs that are charged by USB-C. They’re common in more advanced locks with integrated video cameras or displays, and they’ll usually last roughly 3 and 6 months between charges.
Hardwired power: This type of lock is hardwired into your house’s electrical circuit. They draw power directly from the grid, and will stay powered as long as your home has electricity.
Solar-powered/hybrid: These locks are a bit rarer, and combine internal rechargeable lithium batteries with integrated photovoltaic panels or low-light harvesting technology. Essentially, it is its own backup, running on both batteries and solar power.
Common Questions About Smart Lock Power
If a smart lock battery dies: If the battery of a smart lock completely runs flat, then the electronic elements of the lock won’t work. But that doesn’t mean you’re locked out. Most smart locks from reputable companies will have a backup entry method to protect against this. It will vary from a physical key to an emergency power contact, but there will be a way to unlock it without power.
Will I know if my battery is running low: Yes. Most smart locks will provide a warning when the battery is getting low so that you have a chance to change the batteries or recharge it. Depending on the type you choose that could be a flashing light on the unit, a notification through an app or an audible warning on the block. Or all of the above!
What if there’s a power cut?: If your smart lock is battery powered, then a power cut to your home shouldn’t affect it at all. However, if it relies on Wi-Fi for certain features, like remote unlocking or notifications, then you might lose those functions temporarily. But your PIN, fingerprints or Bluetooth should still work properly. But if your lock is hardwired, then you may have to use a physical backup to unlock it, like a key.
Can I get in without WiFi?: Often, yes, the basic entry methods like PINs, fingerprints or Bluetooth unlocks don’t need Wi-Fi. Only the more sophisticated entry types need Wi-Fi. It’s worth checking when you buy what will and won’t work offline or without power.
How Can You Avoid Getting Locked Out?
The easiest way to avoid running into issues or getting locked out is to stay on top of your battery maintenance. Make sure you replace the batteries when you get a low-power warning and make sure everyone who uses the property knows how the emergency entry system works.
To be clear, a flat battery doesn’t mean that the smart lock isn’t secure. Most are specifically designed to stay locked when the power is lost. And just like with traditional locks, the level of security depends on the quality of the product, the door it’s fitted to and the quality of the installation.
