Essential Physical Security Tips for Small Businesses

Running a small business comes with enough challenges. Physical security shouldn’t be one of them! Unfortunately, small businesses will often find themselves the targets of break-ins, theft and vandalism. Something as simple as a poorly secured door or an outdated lock creates the perfect opportunity for someone to walk away with all of your hard work. The good news is, with the right security measures in place, you can protect your property, employees and assets. As locksmiths we see the same issues time and time again, so here are some straightforward, practical security tips that we think every small business should consider.

Upgrade Your Locks

The very first line of defence for your business is your doors. Specifically, the locks on your doors. Many small businesses still rely on the most basic of locks on their doors – usually the ones that were first installed. Cheap, yes, but easy to pick, bump or force open. Instead, take the time to install high-security locks that are both pick and drill resistant to best protect your property. For external doors, you should also look at commercial-grade deadbolts for extra safety. If the keys for your premises are constantly changing hands, it’s also worth re-keying your locks regularly. Believe me, it’s quicker and more affordable than replacing the entire lock!

Control Who Has Keys

Key control is a major issue for small businesses. Employees come and go, and keys are often duplicated. Sometimes without the owner’s knowledge! One lost or unreturned key can put your entire business at risk. There are a few different solutions for this. You could implement a master key system, which would allow you to control different areas. For example, managers could have full access, while staff can only open certain doors. Restricted key systems are another option, as these keys can’t be copied without authorisation from the locksmith who issued them. Finally, keep a simple key log so you always know who has what.

Secure Your Windows and Secondary Doors

Burglars don’t always come through the front entrance. That would be too easy! Side and rear doors, loading bays and even windows can all be weak points they exploit to get in. For these, look to install reinforced strike plated and latch guards on doors to improve security. Window locks and security film mean they won’t be able to break in through the window lock, and makes the glass much harder to break. When it does, it shatters but holds together, so there’s no hole to get through. Finally, add door closers to make sure doors always shut and lock behind employees, so no one can sneak in unnoticed!

Consider Access Control Systems

If your business has multiple employees, then an access control system might be a smart investment for you. Instead of traditional keys, employees use key cards, fobs or even smartphone apps to get through doors. That means no need to rekey locks when someone leaves. Just deactivate their card or fob. You can also track who comes and goes and when, which can be helpful for a number of reasons. Plus, you can control what levels of access each employee has, keeping them away from areas you don’t want them to be in.

Don’t Forget Safes and Internal Security

It’s not just about keeping outsiders out. Sometimes you need to control access inside the business too. Consider:

  • Installing a safe for cash, documents or valuables
  • Adding internal locks for offices, storage rooms or server areas
  • Using cabinet and drawer locks for sensitive files

This means only trusted staff can access important areas.

Maintain Your Security Regularly

Finally, security isn’t just ‘set and forget it.’ Locks wear down, keys get lost, and businesses change hands. A locksmith can perform regular security audits to make sure your business stays protected. This can include checking all locks and doors for wear or damage, rekeying or upgrading locks after staffing changes, and testing access control or alarm integration.

Securing your small business doesn’t have to be complicated. Start with the basics – strong locks, key control and reinforced doors – and build up from there. Once you’re comfortable with that, you can look at more modern solutions like access control systems and restricted key systems make it easier than ever to protect your livelihood.
