Oh no, disaster, you’re locked out! Maybe you got home after a long day and your key snapped in the lock, or maybe you’re the first one into work and you can’t open the offices. Wherever you are, it’s a stressful, inconvenient thing to have to deal with. But it doesn’t have to be. If you know what to do, what tricks to try, and how to spend your time while you’re waiting for the cavalry to arrive.
Stay Calm and Asses Your Options
First things first, try not to panic. Easier said than done, we know. But take a few deep breaths so that you can think clearly, and deal with the situation properly. Next, go around the property and check if all of the doors and windows are truly locked before you assume you’re locked out. The last thing you want is to call a locksmith only to find the back door was open!
If you’re locked out because you can’t find your keys, think about where they might be. Left inside? At work? In your car? It will help you figure out if someone could bring them to you, and will help you to explain what’s happened to a locksmith later. Finally, avoid the temptation to force your way in. You’re more likely to cause damage to yourself, the lock and the door, and your insurance won’t cover it!
First Steps
Now, it’s time to call a locksmith. If you already know a reputable one this will be simple, just dial away. If you don’t, use Google to find ones in your area. Check their reviews to make sure they’re reputable, and that they offer an emergency call-out service. Once you’ve found one, explain the problem and ask them for an estimated arrival time. This will help you plan what to do while you’re waiting.
That done, it’s time to wait. Depending on where you are and what time it is, this might look different. For example, if you’re at home, you could wait in your car, or knock on a neighbour’s door and ask to wait there. If it’s late or the area is unfamiliar, try to wait in a well-lit place, or somewhere public. Finally, let someone know what’s going on and where you are, especially if it’s dark or you’re alone. Your priority now is to keep yourself safe until the locksmith arrives.
Try and keep yourself calm while you wait for them to arrive. It can be nerve-wracking, but they will have given you a rough ETA, and most good locksmiths will get in touch with you if they’re going to be delayed.
When the locksmith arrives, make sure you verify their identity first. Most will carry some form of Id card, drive a branded van, wear a uniform, or be able to provide you with some form of identification that lets you know you’re dealing with a legitimate professional.
Tips to Avoid Getting Locked Out Again
Once you’re safely back inside, and all sorted, it’s worth taking some time to plan how to prevent this sort of thing from happening again. After all, you don’t want to keep calling even the most reasonably priced locksmith too often! A few options include:
- Have spare keys made. You can keep one in a lock box outside the house, or leave one with a neighbour or friend. So if you forget your keys, you still have a way to get inside.
- Use a key safe. This is essentially a secure lockbox outside your home, and you can use it to store a spare key. Most are opened by either codes or biometrics, so you don’t need to have any more keys.
- Try smart locks or keyless entry. If your lock is damaged or a bit worn out, it might be time to replace it. Smart locks and keyless entry systems can be opened using a code or even an app on your phone, so you don’t have to carry keys around with you at all!
- Make it a habit. Before closing the door, try to get into the habit of checking for your keys. Creating a routine around it can save you from a lot of future stress, and means you’ll be better prepared if it happens again.
